[Śukadeva Gosvāmī said:] Lord Hari, Kṛṣṇa, perfectly knows the hearts of all living beings, and He is especially devoted to the brāhmaṇas. While the Supreme Lord, the goal of all saintly persons, conversed in this way with the best of the twice-born, He laughed and spoke the following words to that dear friend of His, the brāhmaṇa Sudāmā, all the while smiling and looking upon him with affection.

COMMENTARY

In this chapter Kṛṣṇa takes food from Sudāmā and, without Sudāmā’s knowledge, rewards him with unlimited treasure to repay His debt to him. The words sarva-bhūta-mano-abhijña indicate that since Kṛṣṇa knows the minds of everyone, He immediately knew that His friend Sudāmā had brought some flat rice for Him and was ashamed to present it. Kṛṣṇa smiled (smayamāna) at this moment, thinking “Yes, I am going to make you show what you brought for Me.” Kṛṣṇa’s smile then turned to laughter (prahasan) as He thought, “How long are you going to keep this precious gift hidden in your cloth?”

Kṛṣṇa looked at the bundle hidden under Sudāmā’s garment. Then with His loving glance (premṇā nirīkṣaṇena) Kṛṣṇa conveyed, “The veins showing through your emaciated skin and your ragged clothes astonish everyone in Dvārakā. However, these symptoms of poverty will last only until tomorrow morning.”

Although Bhagavān Śrī Kṛṣṇa (kṛṣṇo bhagavān) is the supreme independent Lord, He happily reciprocates with those who are priyam, His cherished servants. Being devoted to the brāhmaṇas (brahmaṇyaḥ), Kṛṣṇa especially enjoys favoring them because they possess unconditional devotion to Him.

TRANSLATION

The Supreme Lord said: O brāhmaṇa, what gift have you brought Me from home? I regard as great even the smallest gift offered by My devotees in pure love, but even great offerings presented by nondevotees do not please Me.

COMMENTARY

Kṛṣṇa asked, “Have you brought anything for Me? I surmise that you, having such affection for Me, would not come empty-handed so far from your house to see Me, who have such affection for you.”

Sudāmā replied, “I am very embarrassed to show it because it is meager.”

Kṛṣṇa responded, “Even if My devotee offers only a little (aṇu) with pure love, it becomes plenty for Me.”
