sarva-loka-hitaḥ śivaḥ
dadhārāvahito gaṅgāṁ
pāda-pūta-jalāṁ hareḥ
Lord Śiva accepted the proposal by saying, "Let it be so." Then, with great attention, he sustained the Gaṅgā purified by the feet of Lord Viṣṇu.
Wherever Gaṅgā flows, I will remain below her. Let her fall on my head at her will.
|| 9.9.10 ||
bhagīrathaḥ sa rājarṣir
ninye bhuvana-pāvanīm
yatra sva-pitṝṇāṁ dehā
bhasmībhūtāḥ sma śerate
The saintly king Bhagīratha brought the Gaṅgā, which can purify the world, to that place on earth where the bodies of his forefathers lay burnt to ashes.
|| 9.9.11 ||
rathena vāyu-vegena
prayāntam anudhāvatī
deśān punantī nirdagdhān
āsiñcat sagarātmajān
She flowed behind Bhagīratha mounted on his chariot moving as fast as the wind, and purified many places. She then sprinkled water on the sons of Sagara who had been burned to ashes.
|| 9.9.12 ||
yaj-jala-sparśa-mātreṇa
brahma-daṇḍa-hatā api
sagarātmajā divaṁ jagmuḥ
kevalaṁ deha-bhasmabhiḥ
By their ashes being sprinkled with that water, the sons of Sagara who had been destroyed as punishment for offending a brāhmaṇa, attained to Svarga.
|| 9.9.13 ||
bhasmībhūtāṅga-saṅgena
svar yātāḥ sagarātmajāḥ
kiṁ punaḥ śraddhayā devīṁ
sevante ye dhṛta-vratāḥ
Simply by Gaṅgā coming in contact with the ashes of their burnt bodies, the sons of Sagara Mahārāja were elevated to Svarga. Therefore, what is to be said of those who worship Gaṅgā faithfully with a determined vow?
|| 9.9.14 ||
na hy etat param āścaryaṁ
svardhunyā yad ihoditam
ananta-caraṇāmbhoja-
prasūtāyā bhava-cchidaḥ
What has been stated here, the deliverance of Sagara’s sons, is not surprising, for the Gaṅgā which destroys material existence flows from the lotus feet of the Lord.
