Prahlāda said: When our father, Hiraṇyakaśipu, went to Mandara Mountain to execute severe austerities, the devatās attacked the demons in a fierce battle.

pipīlikair ahir iva
diṣṭyā lokopatāpanaḥ
pāpena pāpo 'bhakṣīti
vadanto vāsavādayaḥ
The devatās, headed by Indra, said, "As a serpent is eaten by small ants, so Hiraṇyakaśipu, inflicted miseries on the world, has now been eaten by his sin."

teṣām atibalodyogaṁ
niśamyāsura-yūthapāḥ
vadhyamānāḥ surair bhītā
dudruvuḥ sarvato diśam
kalatra-putra-vittāptān
gṛhān paśu-paricchadān
nāvekṣyamāṇās tvaritāḥ
sarve prāṇa-parīpsavaḥ
When the great leaders of the demons saw the unprecedented exertion of the devatās and were being slain, they fled fearfully in all directions to save their lives, not heeding homes, wives, children, animals and household paraphernalia.

vyalumpan rāja-śibiram
amarā jaya-kāṅkṣiṇaḥ
indras tu rāja-mahiṣīṁ
mātaraṁ mama cāgrahīt
The devatās plundered the palace of Hiraṇyakaśipu and Indra captured my mother, the Queen.
“Plundering the palace of Hiraṇyakaśipu” means “by stealing everything, they destroyed it.”

nīyamānāṁ bhayodvignāṁ
rudatīṁ kurarīm iva
yadṛcchayāgatas tatra
devarṣir dadṛśe pathi
As she was being led away, crying in fear like a kurarī bird, Nārada by chance saw her on the road.

prāha naināṁ sura-pate
netum arhasy anāgasam
muñca muñca mahā-bhāga
satīṁ para-parigraham
He said, “O King of the devatās! You should not take this innocent woman. O greatly fortunate one! Release this chaste married woman.”
