Postgraduate programs of the BSU provide an excellent route to better career prospects. The University’s courses are more vocational, with students developing better teamwork and communication skills. Many companies say they would rather employ students from the BSU. The BSU provides its graduates with high level research facilities and learning opportunities, which help them both to write a high quality PhD thesis and to acquire knowledge and skills necessary for their future employment. A generic or interdisciplinary approach is worth mentioning as it can yield interesting results: for example, networking, team working and some communication skills can be enhanced through contact with others outside one’s subject area. Such elements of training must, however, be carefully controlled, because nowadays PhD students are busier than their predecessors. They do not only work to complete their theses within the three-year period, but are also involved in such activities as teaching, attending conferences, making research trips, etc. The development of communication skills is connected with an important professional activity: going to conferences and making reports about one’s work. Students can gain some experience attending a special course on “conference culture”, in which they are taught how to present a paper. They are encouraged to use conferences for developing their professional abilities, and as a springboard for future publications. This course is also an excellent opportunity to plant in their minds the idea of running a conference themselves, thus further enhancing their organizational skills. Conference activity forms an important part of the career of any scientist. For postgraduates it is an important way of participating in academic debate and presenting their own work. By the end of the second year of the program postgraduates usually make practical progress and gain experience in their research. Now it is of importance to focus students’ minds on the key question of whether or not they will pursue academic careers. Therefore, it is crucial to offer them opportunities to hone their skills in this area. By this stage of the program they will have had experience of delivering their material in public, and will have developed their presentation skills; they should also have had other opportunities to defend their ideas, making an original contribution to knowledge in a specific area.
