In the end, an oral examination is held to test the knowledge accumulated throughout the year. Most programmes, which involve classes and seminars, lead up to a thesis.

Research courses differ a lot from taught courses. They last longer from one to three years and provide either Master’s or PhD qualifications. The most well-known research qualification is the Doctor of Philosophy (PhD). There is a shorter version called a Master of Philosophy (MPh) which takes one year of study. Both of these qualifications require students to carry out original research in a particular area of study.

It is a common practice for graduates to enroll initially for the MPh research course and after one year of study if they have made progress in their investigation to register for the PhD research course. All research degree programs involve research training that helps students to acquire the necessary skills and methodological knowledge to do innovative research in their chosen field of study. The training programme includes the development of generic skills relevant to the degree programme and a future career. It constitutes an important basis for research and may take up a significant part of the first year.

At the beginning of a research degree programme a postgraduate student is engaged in reviewing all previous works undertaken in a particular area. At the same time, if he plans to carry out any experiments, he must be provided with the necessary equipment.

This preliminary part of the study can take up to six months, but it is important to note that the process of keeping up to date with other work going on in the subject must continue throughout the entire period of the research.

The next stage of a research course usually involves collecting information or data. This might be achieved through experimentation, observation, etc. The important thing is that something new must be found.

This second part of the research course takes about two years in the case of the PhD research course and a much shorter period of time if one is registered for the MPh research course. At the end of the research course a student writes a thesis. Typically, it consists of introduction, methodology, results and discussion. Finally, a student presents his thesis. If his work meets all the necessary requirements, he is awarded either a MPh or PhD degree (depending on a kind of research course he has registered for). Occasionally, if the members of the Academic Council are not completely satisfied with the work they may ask a candidate to rewrite parts of his thesis.
