There are many things a sailor needs to know in order to safely use knots and bends. Of course, a sailor must be able to make a loop or safely tie a hitch or bowline. He or she must be able to secure a line to a spar. But there are many more complicated procedures a sailor must also understand.

This pamphlet provides information on how to worm a line. Worming creates a smooth round line. The pamphlet also demonstrates techniques for parceling lines. In particular, it focuses on how to turn a wire or rope around a parcel Careful parceling protects lines from damage. Undamaged lines are safer to use and easier to knot or bend.

In addition to this general information on knots, the Vocabulary pamphlet offers more specific training information. It provides important detailed information on tying knots in load bearing lines. The type of knot or bend you choose should take the breaking strain of the line into account. Diagrams on page 3 illustrate how to calculate a line's SWL, or safe working load. This allows you to determine the safety factor, or SF, of a line.
