This section of the seaman's manual explains the basics of wires. This includes common types of wire, such as Jgalvanized wire, and their parts; it also includes common procedures and problems

Wire rope is an important tool at sea. Wire ropes consist of a core wrapped in strands. These strands can be composed of a variety of materials, which may be fiber or metal. The strands are wrapped around the core in a single direction, called the lay. Sailors should pay attention to the lay of the rope. In addition, a sailor must be able to measure the length of lay.

Common problems with wire include kinks, fishhooks, and wear. Kinks can make a wire difficult to work with. Fishhooks can also be dangerous for sailors. They can hook on a sailor's clothing or even cause injury. Sailors must consistently check wires for wear. A worn wire can unexpectedly break, causing serious problems.

See Appendix A for a diagram of the parts of a wire, including its lay and the length of the lay.

See Appendix В for diagrams demonstrating how to wind and splice a wire properly

See Appendix С for specific instructions seizing on wire ropes
