Just like on the highway, there are rules for operating a vehicle on the water. The official rules for ocean traffic are called COLREGs. When a ship is underway, it should always abide by these rules to help prevent collisions. This is true even on the high seas.

One of the most dangerous situations at sea is when two ships are head on. The COLREGs determine which ship has the right of way. One of the ships must give way. The ship that changes course is called the burdened ship. The other ship is allowed to stand on. The ship that keeps its course is called the privileged ship

COLREGs help captains determine the proper course of action in many cases When there is an accident, these rules also help determine who is to blame. If a captain disobeys the rules of the road, he or she is responsible for any problems caused This means the captain bears liability for the accident Sometimes liability means a captain can be sued. It С may also mean losing his or her position.
