Part 3 - Wind

Both tides and currents are relatively stable and easy to measure. Wind, on the other hand, is constantly changing. It may change speed or suddenly back or veer. To manage a ship safely, one must carefully measure wind speed and direction. This includes true wind and relative velocity. These combine to provide a measurement of the apparent wind. This section will cover technological methods for measuring wind as well non-technological techniques, like the Beaufort Scale

Part 2 - Currents

Navigating currents within a port can be an especially challenging part of bringing a ship in safely. You should always measure the set and drift of currents before entering or leaving a port.

Part 1 - Tides

A good sailor should always be aware of the tides. This includes knowing the high tide and low tide hours. It also means one should be familiar with the shore's geography. When the tide floods or ebbs, it can change the shape of the shore. These changes can significantly change a ship's routs or docking schedule.

Chapter IV: Introduction

There are many factors that a sailor must consider when entering or leaving a port. The three most important factors are tides, currents, and wind
