Towing, Mooring, and Anchoring

The purpose of this course is to teach students the skills of basic seamanship. In particular, we will focus on procedures that require cables and chains. The course will begin with maintenance procedures. This will include care and repair. It will also include learning to measure by shots. We will focus particularly on using a mooring line to tie a ship to pier.

Once students have mastered these skills, we will proceed to working with anchors. We will study simple anchoring techniques. We will also cover common anchor problems. You will learn what to do when an anchor is shod or fouled.

The most difficult portion of the course will be our unit on towing. This unit will build on our previous work with chain and cables. You will learn to use a towing hawser to secure a ship to a tug. You will also learn to keep in step with another tug. Finally, we will learn to use a catenary to keep slack between connected ships.

This course will be divided into two segments. The first half of the course will be held in a classroom. The second half will be held aboard ship. This offers you the . opportunity to practice what you have learned.
