A block and tackle system is one of the most important fittings on a ship. Block and tackle allows seamen to lift heavy loads manually. This is especially important on cargo ships

A block and tackle system consists of several parts The block is encased in a frame or shell of durable material Within the frame are sheaves, or pulley wheels, that guide ropes Ropes are threaded through the sheaves of both standing and moving blocks. One end of the rope, called the fall, is left free. The sailor pulls the fall to lift the load attached to one of the blocks.

A block and tackle system can be rigged in a variety of configurations. Each has a different name A system with an even number of sheaves is called a purchase, while one with an odd number of sheaves is called a luff.

Single-whip and runner configurations are used for lifting lighter loads. A runner uses a standing, or stationary, block; in contrast, a single-whip uses a moveable block. But both configurations use only a single sheave and block.

Unlike the single-whip and runner, the gun tackle and twofold purchaseconfiguration each use two blocks, A gun tackle rigging uses two blocks with one sheave each. A twofold purchase rigging uses two blocks with double sheaves.
