Imagine a line down the middle of the ship from bow to stern. When someone is on board and facing the bow, the starboard side is to their right. The left side of the ship is the port side. Items near the center line are inboard. Something that is outboardis away from the center line.

An item that is forward is towards the bow. Something aft is towards the stern. We use the term “abaft” the describe something that is moving towards the stern. Something behind the ship is astern. Topside refers to areas on deck or above the waterline. Finally, below refers to a lower deck.
