Chapter 2: Nautical Measurements

Instead of using land-based measurements, sailors use nautical measurements. A ship’s speed is measured in knots. A knot is a unit of speed that is equal to one nautical mile per hour. Nautical miles express the distance a ship travels. Unlike land-based measurements, nautical miles follow the curvature of the earth. This allows for accurate marine navigation.

Water depth is measured in fathoms. One fathom equals 1.8 meters, or 6 feet. A depth of 100 fathoms equals one cable. Finally, sailors often refer to a ship’s weight by using gross tons. Gross tons measure a ship’s internal volume.
