SUTRA I. 1. 22.

आकाशस्तल्लिङ्गात्॥१.१.२२॥

ākāśastalliṅgāt ..1.1.22..

… Akashah, the word Akasha as used here. ... Tat, his, of Brahman, …. Lingat, because of the characteristic mark. The Akasha here refers to Brahman, because the defining marks of Brahman are found in this passage.

COMMENTARY

The word Akasha bore refers to Brahman, Because the characteristic marks of Brahman are found here; such as, creating all elements, sustaining all creatures, and absorbing. them back into himself, The word Sarva, all is used in the above passage; where it says ‘Sarvani ha va imani bhutani’, verily all these beings, so it can not refer to the material Akasha from which all beings do not come out. For at least the material Akasha can not come out of itself. For the material Akasha has come out of something else, and so it can not be the cause of its own production, therefore, the Akasha above-mentioned can not be the material Akasha.

Moreover, in the above passage, the word ‘Eva’, ‘alone’, is used in connection with Akasha, showing that from Akasha alone and from no other cause, come out all this universe Thus it is an additional reason to hold that Akasha here does not mean the material Akasha. For we see that clay, etc., are causes of pots, etc., and so the material Akasha is not the sole cause, but there are other causes also. But with regard to Brahman, all this is consistent. He is the stole cause, because he possesses all power and everything is His form. Though the word Akasha in its ordinary significance means the material Akasha, yet here owing to the stronger indication of the context, it applies to Para Brahman.
