Cookies and Tracking protection

5.2 Cookies and Tracking protection

Google Chrome and Tor Browser both give their users ability to manage their HTTP Cookies. Users can choose the websites that can access their cookies and can also delete cookies from selected or all websites. Both browsers allow to block third-party Cookies, although in the Tor Browser it is done by default settings.

Google Chrome offers an additional feature called “Do Not Track” request which sends a signal to websites requesting them not to track user activity.

Tor Browser includes built-in tracking protection through its NoScript extension, which blocks scripts and trackers by default. This provides an extra layer of privacy and security to users while browsing. Moreover, the Tor Browser offers its users a possibility to choose from 3 security levels which determine the level of protection against website fingerprinting and tracking techniques.

5.3 Encryption

Google Chrome and Tor Browser use HTTPS encryption by default and warn their users if a website does not support HTTPS. Both browsers use SSL certificates to ensure secure connections between users and websites.

Tor browser provides an additional layer of encryption using RSA and TLS due to implementation of The Onion Routing which further anonymizes user data and protects against network surveillance.

6 Summary

In this paper the author analysed and compared the Tor Browser and Google Chrome in terms of browsing history settings, cookies and tracking protection, and encryption. Both browsers offer their users a variety of features to stay private and secure.

6.1 Conclusion

Google Chrome and Tor Browser both offer different features and levels of security and privacy to their users. While Google Chrome can provide basic privacy and security features, Tor Browser goes beyond that by not storing any browsing history by default, offering the New Identity feature to erase all data, and implementing an additional layer of encryption using the Onion Routing. Tor Browser also includes built-in tracking protection through its NoScript extension and provides users with the option to choose from three different security levels.

Overall, both Google Chrome and Tor Browser provide their users with valuable tools to protect their online activities, and the choice between them ultimately depends on the user's specific needs and preferences.
