Cookies and Tracking protection

3.1 Browsing history

Google Chrome allows users to control their browsing history through various settings. The browsing history is stored locally on user’s device. Users can choose to clear their browsing history automatically when they exit the browser, or they can manually delete specific items from their history as shown in Figure 1.

Chrome also offers an “incognito mode” that allows users to browse without saving any history. However, this browsing mode does not provide complete privacy as the user's activity can still be tracked by their ISP or by the websites they visit [2].

Chrome provides options for managing HTTP Cookies, such as blocking third-party cookies or deleting cookies when the browser is closed. By default settings, Google Chrome blocks third-party cookies only in incognito mode. However, users can choose to also disable third-party cookies in the regular browsing mode as shown in Figure 2.

Users can also select to allow cookies only for certain websites.

The browser also allows users to block or limit tracking by websites by enabling the "Do Not Track" option which sends a request to a website to stop tracking and collecting the browsing data. However, it is important to note that following this request is not obligatory by law, and website operators are not obligated to comply with it. Therefore, it is possible for a website to ignore the DNT request, resulting in continued tracking of the user's activity [3].
