Much has been said lately of factory ships and their practices. Fish processing vessels – as they are also called – are very important to the world economy. Ships like the longline factory vessel and the super seiner make it possible to keep up with rising demand.

We spoke with the captain of one purse seine freezer vessel named Alfred Bannigan. He used to run a factory squid jigger and a freezer trawler.Alfred’s current vessel is based out of the home port of Hull, England. He is not part of a fleet with a mother ship. He told us how important these vessels are.

“You see, the processing facilities are onboard,” he said. “That means the fish can be kept fresh.” He also mentioned factory barges.“They’re like floating fish factories. They’re essential to the business.”

Most importantly, perhaps, factory ships provide thousands of jobs around the world.
