Groundfish live in waters around the world. All groundfish live near the ocean floor. For this reason, they are also called bottomfish. Most stay near coasts, but some live further out. There are various types of groundfish.

It is easy to recognize these types by body markings. The pollock and cod have lines on their bodies. The haddock features a black spot. Groundfish are also identified by body shape. Halibut and flounder have a flat shape. Fins mark groundfish species as well. Both the goosefish and sea bass have special fins.

Groundfish are a popular food. Many, like the sole and hake have flaky, white meat.
