The institutions of marriage and the family are systems in which both legal and personal relationships of people are combined. On the one hand, they express the need of society to regulate the personal lives of people, and on the other, the need of people to have symbolic confirmation of the circumstances of their life that are significant for them.

In the past, the needs of society had the most significant role in the formation of these institutions. Now personal needs of people are gradually coming to the fore. The logical development of this trend will be the separation of these functions into two independent institutions. Already now it is easy to notice that there is almost no logical connection between the property and emotional or sexual relationships of people. The last thing that unites them (except for traditionalism) is the need to ensure the rights of the child, which, theoretically, can be provided in many other ways. Attempts to put the modern needs of people and society in the regulatory framework of past centuries do not bring any benefit, except inconvenience.

I am sure that as long as personal and property relationships between people exist, the institutions of family and marriage will continue to exist in one form or another. But I expect that soon we will see how they will change in accordance with the current needs of people. States will stop trying to regulate sexually and personal relationships of people normatively, and all legal relationships between people will be regulated regardless of those relationships that do not need legal regulation.
