Traditionally its divided into the West end and East End. The West End is famous o its beautiful avenues lined with plane trees, big stores, rich mansions, expensive restaurants, hotels, theaters and night clubs. The East End used to be a poor area filled with warehouses, factories, slums and miserable houses. Quite a lot of people lived from hand to mouth here. “The Smoke” is a nickname of London. Without doubt, this name is connected with the famous London smog. Smog was caused by large amounts of coal burning in the area of London beginning with the 15th century. Nowadays, smog caused by traffic pollution, however, does occur in modern London. The City is part of London. It used to be the old Roman and medieval town of London, but is now the area of London with all banks. The City now is one of the most important financial centers in the world. The famous Globe Theatre where Shakespeare staged his plays is situated in London. It was built in 1599 by Shakespeare’s playing company, the Lord Chamberlains Men, and was destroyed by fire on 29 June 1613. Education system in Great Britain. The education system in UK is divided into four main parts, primary education, secondary education, further education, higher education. Children in the UK have to legally attend primary and secondary education which runs from about 5 years old until the student is 16 years old. The education system in the UK is also split into “key stages” which breaks down as follows: 1.5 to 7 years’ old 2.7 to 11 years’ old 3.11 to 14 years’ old 4.14 to 16 years old. Primary education begins in the UK at the age 5 and continues until age 11, comprising key stages one and two under the UK educational system. From age 11 to 16, students will enter secondary school for key stages three and four to start their move towards taking the GCSE’s. Once a student finishes secondary school they have the option to extend into further education to take their A-levels, GNVQ’s, BTEC’s or other such qualifications. Probably the most important subject area on this site, this explains more about the higher education system in the UK and now it works for international students.
