The final scripture shows us the punishment God chose to inflict on the Midianites

The punishment

Numbers 31v15And Moses said unto them, Have ye saved all the women alive? 16 Behold, these caused the children of Israel, through the counsel of Balaam, to commit trespass against the Lord in the matter of Peor, and there was a plague among the congregation of the Lord. 15 “Have you allowed all the women to live?” he asked them. 16 “They were the ones who followed Balaam’s advice and enticed the Israelites to be unfaithful to the Lord in the Peor incident so that a plague struck the Lord’s people. 17 Now kill all the boys. And kill every woman who has slept with a man, 18 but saves for yourselves every girl who has never slept with a man.

Although the punishments sound so severe; it illustrates that God knows that

1. The young males will rise up and inflict a greater level of destruction on Israel and

2. The women who had slept with men are more likely to seduce Israel back into apostasy

In conclusion, it is not God who went out to search out how he might wipe out a particular group of people but rather they chose to go against his plan and therefore reaped the punishment of it all
