What are the context and meaning of Numbers 31:17-18?

One of the reasons why people misrepresent God or unjustly judge his actions is due to lack of knowledge and the refusal to spend time getting a complete picture of the troubling events from the Bible.

This question is a classic case!.

They focus is on what God did to the Midianite rather than why he did it, therefore, let's get some clarity on this by visiting Numbers chapter 21.

The children of Israel were on the journey to the Promised Land. God had already told them the land of the Moabites did not belong to them and he was not given them this land. They were to go around it on the way to the land he promised them.

However, when the children of Israel arrived near Moab the Moabites and the Midianites (Grandchildren of Abraham through Keturah) came out to war against the Israelites. They staged a spiritual war rather than a physical one.

It was determined that trying to defeat Israel in a physical war will be challenging; therefore they resorted to hiring a prophet to curse the children of Israel.

When the prophet - Balaam - surmised that this will not work; he asked the Midianite women to seduce the Israelites men into the sexual worship of other gods. Balaam the prophet and Balak the Midianite knew that this will result in apostasy and death.

Eventually, 24000 Israelites died from the plague as a result of the worship of other gods
