PREFACE

It is not only a matter of gratification for Shri Parampara Sabha to publish its fourteenth work but also a matter of satisfaction to the founder respected Shri BSS Iyengar for having authored all the four works of Nammalvar. This book contains two of Alvar’s prabhandam viz. Thiruvachiriyam and Periyathiruvandadi. The first one is the smallest of Alvar’s prabandhams consisting of only seven Pachurams. But at the same time very cryptic, meaningful and poetic. Alvar was at the heights of ecstasy while enjoying the mystic experience of Lord Shrimannarayana, visualized through pleasurable paramabhakti developed through the intense desire to perceive His exquisite incomporable beauty. For him, vision of his Lord Surpasses even the Moksha sought by the upasakas through various means. He is the Primordial cause for the entire cosmos and instrumental in the creation of everything, including Chaturmuka Bramha, Rudra and other demy Gods like Devendra and others. He is also the sustainer and the destroyer of all. Though all the seven pachurams are enchanting, the first one describing the amazing beauty of Sheshashayi in yoganidra, reposed on the Milky Ocean amidst ruffling waves, the fifth one which gives the description of Thrivikrama with one foot on the earth and the other pointing towards Brahmaloka making the hosts of Gods to look at it with dismay as if directing them towards the righteous path, having thousand arms and the last Pachuram which describes Lord Krishna reposing leisurely on the baniyan leaf having everything in his navel region at the time of pralaya, are fascinating. For Alvar the greatest of all the prapannas, the super paramekanthi, the paramapurushartha is to bear the lotus like feet of the Supreme and Infinite on his head, with paramabhakti. Within the short span of seven pachurams Nammalvar, very comprehensively brings out the Tatva, Hitha and Purushartha leading to Moksha.

Periyathiruvandadi which is of eighty-six pachurams carries the very essence of the Ahtarvaveda. On account of the serenity of the matter and the svapadeshartha that it contains, it is surmised that it must have been titled as the Periyathiruvandadi. To advice the mind to invoke the Lord realizing His Infinite nature is the aim of this prabandam. Lords grace alone should be there to realize the real nature of Buddi, caused by the enlightenment of the knowledge, which in turn will be throu3h purifying the mind. Parabhakti is also the means to achieve this. Alvar induces his mind to invoke with anannyabhava the Lord of Nirathishayaguna. The thirty-sixth Pachuram which describes the Lord’s Anathishayavatsalya, Soubhagya and Saushilya with which he gives protection to His bhaktha without taking into consideration any of innumerable blemishes, is really enticing with rhythm of words.

Revered brother Shri BSS Iyengar, as it was in his other works, has given a lucid translation and significant notes with the introduction and makes both the prabandams readable, which otherwise would have become not easier to understand; of course with the help of Periyavachanpillai. On the instance of the author when I made a request to Shri Vishnavasimham Dr. V.V. Ramanujam, Retired Professor, University of Madras and the editor of Yetirajapaduka, who had authored Bhagavadramanujam’s Gadyatrayam of our Publication, has graciously favoured us in writing the foreword to this work in his eighty third year, though preoccupied with so many writings. l am extremely grateful to him for his kind gesture. We are olso thankful to Shri Suresh of Interworld Communications for the nice DTP. Last but not least the sabha always remains grateful to Shri Nagasundar of M/s Geetanjali Graphics for his kind assistance in getting the book so elegantly printed. This effort of this sabha is one more step in fulfilling the ambition of making available the annotated editions of the books on Shri Vaishnavism, including the Rahasyagranthas.
