Fish are an important economic resource not only to small communities but on a national level. However, harvesting them carries some risks

One of the most dangerous effects of commercial fishing is overfishing. There are various kinds of overfishing, such as growth overfishing, recruitmentoverfishing, and ecosystem overfishing. In each of these types of overfishing, commercial harvesting depletes important fish stock. This can disturb ecosystems and even cause them to collapse.

Another negative environmental effect of commercial fishing is the accidental netting of endangered species.

Government regulations are one tool for preventing threatened fish species from going extinct. Legislators can declare a moratorium on fishing in a particular region.

Many commercial fishing companies work to limit the negative environmental impact of their operations. This is important in order to retain biodiversity. In addition, companies may want to reduce environmental damage for economic reasons. When waters are overfished, they may fail to recover. This means they no longer provide fish for harvesting. A company may be motivated to limit overfishing to help the environment or to benefit their own business.

Consumers can reward these responsible companies by purchasing fish from companies that use sustainable practices. There are certainly important environmental concerns raised by commercial fishing. However, governments, companies, and consumers can work together to limit those possible negative effects
