I disagree with the opinion that the painter who knows his own craft and nothing else will turn out to be a very superficial artist. Just the other way around, if painter dealing his own craft during his life and known his work very well, so he can obtain a great success in his creation. So I believe artist get a mastery and professional skills, and he by no means a superficial painter. For example one of the outstanding British portraitist who had an important influence on his contemporaries. He collected Old Masters paintings and made careful studies of Rembrandt, Titian, Corregio. He believed that by analysis of Old Masters he could build a composite style of great art. His aim not to copy their individual works, but to win a similar mastery of the effect which they knew how to achieve: to rival them in their own language but not to copy them. So Reynolds was really self-taught artist and he was very successful in his time and stay nowadays. 

3.  What are some of the qualities a true artist must possess?

I think a true artist must possess persistence, unique nature talent and try to develop, improve and expand a scope your creation. For example many artists made careful studies of Old Masters. They believed that by analysis of Old Masters he could build a composite style of great art. Their aim not to copy their individual works, but to win a similar mastery of the effect which they knew how to achieve: to rival them in their own language but not to copy them.
