2. Paraphrase the following sentences: a. Montag’s face was entirely numb and featureless…(146). b. She ran past with her body stiff, her face floured with powder, her mouth gone, without lipstick (147). c. Scientists give us goobledegook about friction and molecules (149). d. You think you can walk on water with your books. Well, the world can get by just fine without them (152). e. We’ll trace this and drop it on your friend (153). f. Go ahead now, you second-hand litterateur, pull the trigger (154). g. Motag lay watching the dead-alive thing fiddle the air and die (156). h. He remembered the books and turned back. Just on the off chance (158). i. He tried to piece it all together, to go back to the normal pattern of life a few short days ago….. (159).
3 Give synonyms and make up situations with the following words and phrases from the novel: To be juggled (146); to snort (146); to put/turn in the alarm (147, 151); to blast away (147); to drift about (148); all by your lonesome (149); to feel oneself gush out in smth. (150); to slump into a charcoal (151); to be in slime up to one’s lip (152); to flop over (154); to reel back (153); to hobble around (157); extra margin of safety (161).
4. Answer the questions and fulfil the tasks: a. Comment upon Beatty’s words: ‘Well, now you did it………” (146). How did he explain the situation to Montag ? What was the reaction of Montag? What did the simile “….he felt his head turn like a stone carving…” imply (146)? b. How did Mildred leave the house? What was her emotional state of mind? Did Montag catch who betrayed him? c. Why did Beatty want Montag “ to do this job all by your lonesome” and with a flamethrower ? d. Why couldn’t Montag run away as Faber advised him? e. Describe in details how Montag burnt his house. Point out the SD, used by the author to make the whole scene emotionally coloured. f. Who was the first to turn in the alarm? Why did Beatty call Montag “ a silly damn snob” and an “idiot” (152)? g. Comment upon the metaphor “earthquake” (p.152). h. How did Beatty put an end to the communication of Montag and Faber? Describe his actions. i. Why did Montag shoot “one continuous pulse of liquid fire” on Beatty? What makes the whole scene vivid and emotionally coloured? J. Describe Montag’s “fight” with the Hound (155). Point out SD used. k. Comment upon unuttered represented speech: “…you’re a fool, a damn fool…” (157). l. What was Montag’s emotional state of mind after he had killed Beatty and the firemen? Did he want to kill anyone? Do you agree with Montag that “Beatty wanted to die”? Why did the author repeat the sentence but in Past Perfect - “Beatty had wanted to die” (158)? m. Why did Montag think that he had burnt Faber? What did he find in his pocket? Where was he running? What were the actions of the police? n. Sum up your observations on SD.
