9 EXCUSES TO GET AWAY FROM YOUR FAMILY THIS HOLIDAY SEASON

GLOSSARY:

family gathering

an event when all members of a family and extended family meet together for a social occasion.

e.g. Any family gathering could not be complete without something going wrong.

significant other

a person with whom someone has a romantic or sexual relationship that has lasted for some time and that is likely to last longer

grudge

a strong feeling of anger and dislike for a person who you feel has treated you badly, especially one that lasts for a long time

e.g. The old grudges, the political debates over the dinner table, the screaming babies— family gatherings may become the source of your stress!

ultimate

most important, highest, last, or final; having more importance or more influence over what happens than all others

e.g. So this year, give yourself the ultimate gift.

 

e.g. The CEO is responsible for making the ultimatedecision.

errand

a short trip you make to do something, such as buying or delivering things in the neighborhood

e.g. He would clean, do errands, and babysit for their 7-year-old daughter.

e.g. I’ve got to run a few errands(= do errands) and then stop by my mother’s.

flare up

get worse suddenly (for a pain or medical condition)

e.g. if things start to suck, your illness can suddenly flare up and nobody will question you.

 

e.g. In moments of stress, his asthma always flares up.

give back

contribute money, goods, or, especially, services for charitable purposes, as if in return for one's own success

e.g. You’ve decided to give back this holiday by helping those in need at a soup kitchen.

 

e.g. We organize this Thanksgiving dinner at the old-age home to give back to the community.

be off

be slightly unwell or in poor condition; be incorrect or faulty

e.g. His internal clock will be off and Dr. Spock says that’s bad.

 

e.g. Oh that looks delicious, but my stomach’s a bit off — I’d hate to risk it.

call out

say something in a loud voice; announce something

e.g. Her kid isn’t old enough to be able to call out her lies.

 

e.g. The announcer called out the names of the runners as they crossed the finish line.

look through

examine the parts, pages, samples, etc., of something

e.g. You are having a great time looking through Aunt Mabel’s photos of her doll collection.

e.g. I looked through the book, but I haven't had a chance to read it.

curl up

lie in a comfortable curved position

e.g. Let’s spend the rest of the day curled up with some Netflix and a giant bag of candy.

 

e.g. The cat curled up on the couch, sleeping happily.

show up

arrive for a gathering or event

e.g. Then, as the family activities start the next day, show up, but act a little more reserved, as if speech suddenly requires energy that you just don’t have.

 

e.g. He showed up late for the meeting.

move up

increase in value, number, or amount

e.g. Little Jack’s bedtime suddenly was moved up an hour.

 

e.g. Share prices move up and down depending on market conditions.

get away

leave or escape from a person or place, often when it is difficult to do this

e.g. If it sounds like a horrible lie to get away from your family, donate enough money to make a nice difference.

 

e.g. We walked to the next beach to get away from the crowds.

come down

lose one's wealth or social status; descend from a higher point to a lower one

e.g. Oh dear, well it seems like you are coming down with something.

 

e.g. In the early 20th century, a respected woman in high society came down dramatically if she got divorced.

inform an authority figure of one's bad or illegal behavior; reveal embarrassing information about someone

e.g. The best thing about using pets as an excuse is that they can’t rat you out.

soup kitchen

a place where free food is given to people with no money or no homes

e.g. You’ve decided to give back this holiday by helping those in need at a soup kitchen.

e.g. If it sounds like a horrible lie to get away from your family, donate enough money to make a nice difference.

peace and quiet

tranquility; freedom from stress or interruptions

e.g. Oops, you got lost and instead of the pharmacy, you found a few hours of peace and quiet.

 

e.g. The vast majority of people coming here are fleeing war and terror themselves, all they want is peace and quiet.

heartless

cruel and not worrying about other people

e.g. Heartless corporate bastards and all that.

 

e.g. Parents should never be heartless towards their children.

furry

covered with or feeling/looking like fur

e.g. She was wearing her bathrobe and pink, furry slippers.

 

e.g. Furry friends are great excuses to get away from that family gathering that you just can’t bear to attend.
