Look at the pictures. What do you see?

Are the boots different or the same?

* different – разные, непохожие

* the same – одинаковые

Of course, they are different – the first boot is old and the second one is new.

Рассматривая различные предметы, мы можем описать их с помощью прилагательных, а иногда предметы отличаются настолько сильно, что прилагательные будут прямо противоположными (антонимами – the opposites).

Множество новых слов – это конечно хорошо, но если нужно сравнить два предмета или человека, то каждый раз можно говорить предложения типа:

1) This table is big and that one is small. – Этот стол большой, а тот – маленький.

2) I am tall and you are short! – Я высокий, а ты низкий!

3) His book is boring and my book is interesting. – Его книга скучная, а моя книга – интересная.

Но эти предложения получаются длинные, и в них много повторяющихся слов.

Можно сделать проще, будем использовать сравнительные прилагательные. Смысл при этом сохранится, но сами предложения будут гораздо короче J

Например:

1) Этот стол больше того стола. → That table is bigger than that one.

2) Я выше тебя! → I am taller than you.

3) Моя книга интереснее, чем его.→ My book is more interesting than his.

Чтобы поставить прилагательное в сравнительную форму (comparative form), есть несколько правил. Перепиши или вклей их к себе в тетрадь и выучи, обрати внимание на исключения (exceptions):

–ER ending

(добавляем окончание -ed)

Слово заканчивается на -e

→ добавляем только -r

2. Big – biGGer

Заканчивается на согл-гл-согл

→ удваиваем согласный
3. CrazY – crazIER

→ y меняем на -ier

more serious (серьезнее)

more beautiful (красивее)

more comfortable (удобнее)
more uncomfortable (неудобнее)

Для «коротких» прилагательных:
1) из 1 слога (slow, big)

2) из 2 слогов, которые заканчиваются на –y, -er (clever, funny, crazy, easy)

Исключения (Exceptions):

good – better (лучше)

bad – worse (хуже)

Для «длинных» прилагательных:
2 слога (modern, boring)
и больше (interesting, difficult, beautiful)

Example:

Green shoes are bigger than black shoes. (слово than – чем, ставим после сравнительного прилагательного) → Зеленые туфли больше чем черные туфли.

А что делать, если есть, например, Мэри, которая выше и Тома, и Питера? Она вообще самая-самая супер высокая из них всех!!!

Как сказать: «Мэри – самая высокая!»?

Тут нам понадобится превосходная форма (superlative form) прилагательного «высокий» - the tallest.

→ Mary is the tallest!

Чтобы поставить прилагательное в превосходную степень, тоже нужны некоторые правила:
