44. Shravana (hearing, etc.) only joined to instruction imparted with full grace (by the preceptor become the means of seeing Brahman); for that is said (in the Shruti).

The sight of Brahman is not to be attained merely by means of hearing, etc.; but (only when they are) coupled with the direction (of the preceptor) how to do. It (precept) would bear results only as the preceptor bestows it upon him (the pupil); for it is said in the Shruti thus: “The person who has a good preceptor knows Him” (Ch. VI. 14. 2).

In the following it is discussed whether the grace of the preceptor or one’s own exertion is stronger (i.e., more efficacious).

45. On account of the plurality of indication, that indeed is more powerful (in that respect, and that (Shravana, &c.) also is declared necessary by Shruti).

This may be seen from the statement which Satyakama makes in answer to his master’s inquiry, though he bad known the Vidya from Rishabha and others, thus: “May thy worshipful self be pleased to impart to me what is for my good; for I have heard precepts only from those like thy reverence; but Vidya that is learnt from the preceptor (from one who is adopted by the pupil as his preceptor) attains stability” (Ch. IV. 9. 23); again from the permission granted to Satyakama by his preceptor thus: “Indeed nothing of this will be lost (to three),” as well as from the statement made by Upakoshala the pupil (and his preceptor’s only reply). Thus many are the indications of the fact that the grace of the preceptor is the stronger and more important; but then it should not be supposed that the grace of the preceptor would suffice; for, according to the injunction, “He is to be heard, thought, etc,” that also, viz., hearing, etc., should be performed. It is also said in the Varaha: “Powerful is the grace of the preceptor and nothing can be more powerful than that; however, for the purpose of release hearing (study), etc., are to be practised.”
