COMMENTARY

 

«In the interior», that is, in the City called the Great Ether, everything looks like a city made of elemental matter, in the sight of His own (devotees). «Of His own», means the devotees who have been elected by the Lord as His own. (These devotees see this Bahivyoma as a physical city). As says the Shruti (Mundaka, III., 2. 3):

This Self cannot be gained by dissertation is devoid of devotion, nor by mere keen intellect, nor by much hearing. It is gained only by him whom the Atman chooses. To him this Atman reveals His form.

(Thus this divine city is reachable only by the elects of the Lord). Though all the objects in that city are pure and simple essence of Brahman, for everything there is Brahman, being a manifestation of His power, yet they look to His devotees, as if made of material objects, like earth, etc. The word «Vat» or «like», in the word Bhutagrama-vat, shows that it looks like a physical city, but is not actually so. Everything there is Brahman as has already be on mentioned before in the Mundaka Upanishad, II., 2. 11:

«This verily is Brahman the immortal (who appears! there) in the east and in the west, in the north and the south, in the zenith and the nadir. The Brahman alone is it who pervades all directions. This Brahman alone is the Full (that exists in all time, the Eternity). This Brahman is the best».

To His devotees, the Lord, the Supreme Self, who essentially consists of knowledge and bliss, appears variously, as having hands, feet, nails, hair, etc. Similarly, this Brahmapura, though consisting of pure Brahman Itself, appears to His devotees like earth, water, etc., and though it is all of one essence, yet it scintillates with many colours, like the feather of the peacock.
