1.  Read and translate the following extracts:

pp. 121-122 from “He was eating…” to “…fly in the air.”

pp. 129-130 from   “A silver needle…” to “…hot emptiness.”

pp. 136-137 from “ The Mechanical Hound…” to “… with blood.”

p. 142 from “Silence. …” to “…listen.”

    2. Paraphrase the following sentences:

a. You’ll  have  to take me on  faith (120).                                                                                                                      b. I plunk the children in school nine days out of ten (126).                                                                         c . I voted last election , same as everyone, and I laid it on the line for President Noble (126). d.  One was always picking his nose; it drove me wild (127).                                                               e. Mildred snatched the book with a laugh (129).                                                                                             f. Ladies, you won’t understand a word. It goes umpty-tumpty-ump (129).                                          g. The others in the middle of the desert watched her crying grow very loud as her face squeezed itself out of shape (131).                                                                                                                  h. Even now he could feel the start of the long journey, the leave-taking, the going away from the self he had been (134).                                                                                                                                                 i. In Beatty’s sight, Montag felt the guilt of hands (137).                                                                         j. I lay down for a cat-nap and in this dream you and I, Montag, got into a furious debate on books (139).                                                                                                                                                                    k. He’s trying to confuse. He’s slippery. Watch out! (139).                                                                            l. We all have our harps to play (142).

 

   3. Study  the verbs and point out their combining power (valency):

To drain (123), to jerk (125), to heave (126), to scrape ( 128), to pierce (129), to snatch (129), to stack (133),  to haggle (134), to nag (134),  to shove (136), to rip  (143).

  4. Answer the questions and fulfil the tasks:

a. Comment upon the description of the weather on pp.119-120. What atmosphere is created by the author? What SD are used?

b.  How did Montag and Faber continue to communicate? What things did they discuss?

c. How did the author introduce Mildred’s guests – Mrs. Phelps and Mrs.Bowles - to the reader? Dwell on the general tone of the passage, which describes the guests. Do you agree there is a touch of irony in the passage? 

d. Did Montag participate in the conversation? Did the women like or dislike Montag’s presence in the parlour? Why? Why not?

e.  Comment upon Montag’s words: “Did  you hear them, did you hear these monsters talking about monsters?”.

f.   What poem did Montag read to the women? How did they react? Why was Mrs. Phelps crying? Why did Mrs. Bowels blame Montag and call him “nasty”?

 g.  Why was Montag ready to kick the guests out of the door? What was his emotional state of mind? Comment upon his words on page 132 “Go home …….”.

h.   Why did Montag feel the necessity for “strange warmness and goodness” that came from Faber’s voice? Describe his thoughts and feelings on the way downtown. How did Faber support Montag?

i.   Dwell on the beginning of Montag’s working day (136-137). Comment upon the use of simile “fingers were like ferrets” and epithet “alcohol-flame stare” (p.137).

j. What quotations did Beatty start with? (138-139). Why? What was he driving at?

k. Why did Montag feel beaten unmercifully when Beatty “burst into quotations” in their conversation? Which of the quotations are familiar to you? Do you agree with Faber, that Beatty “was muddying the waters”? Comment upon his words : “Oh, you were scared silly……………all dwindled away to piece” (141-142).

l. Do you agree with Faber that “the Captain belongs to the most dangerous enemy of truth and freedom”? Why? Give your reasons.

m. Describe in details what happened after the station bell had  rung (pp.142-145).

n. Sum up your observations on SD. Point out the cases of:

       Epithet  ( 121, 122, 123, 124, 130, 134, 137, 144, 145).

       Simile (119, 121, 125, 137, 142, 144, 145).

       Rhetorical question  ( 128, 132, 144, 145).

       Parallel construction (131, 133, 134, 135, 142, 144).

        Repetition ( 125, 132, 133, 134).

       Inversion (134).

       Polysyndeton, asyndeton (125, 127, 128, 130, 133,136, 143 ).

 

 

 5. Give   summary of pp.119-145.
