A modern car is a complex means of transport. However, it is relatively easy to operate as a number of devices help you to keep control. An instrument panel in a modern car, for example, provides the driver with valuable and important information. It includes such instruments as a

       tachometer (1),

an engine (coolant) temperature sensor (2),

a speedometer (3),

a fuel level sensor (a fuel gauge) (4),

an odometer (5),

a fuel consumption indicator (6)

and an oil temperature sensor (7).

The tachometer is necessary to indicate the engine speedin revolutions per minute. When the engine turns slowly at the minimum speed the alternator also turns slowly. It doesn't produce enough current for the engine. Therefore, the battery must supply the necessary current.

The engine (coolant) temperature sensor is a device that accurately(точно) measures the engine coolant temperature. It gives an indication of temperature of the engine.

The function of thespeedometer is to indicate the speed of the car. A speed limit to be adopted for towns and built-up areas is 30 miles per hour or 60 km per hour.

The purpose (цель) of the fuel gauge is to indicate the amount of fuel(gasoline, diesel, oil) to be contained in the petrol tank. If its level in the tank is very low, the warning light switches on in the car. When this happens it is necessary to put some more petrol into the tank.

The odometer is an instrument for measuring the distance travelled by a vehicle or in other words, it measures the number of revolutions of the wheel.

A fuel consumption indicator (fuel economy indicator) is used in vehicles having liquid fuel engines. The indicator comprises fuel flow and vehicle speed sensors. It determines and displays a performance ratio, consisting of the ratio of the instantaneous rate of fuel usage to its average rate.

The oil temperature is a vital part (жизненно важная часть) to keep your engine run smoothly. The oil temperature should be a few degrees warmer than the coolant. If the temperature gauge gives false readings or does not move, you may need to replace the oil temperature sensor.

Instrument panels in the cars in the near future will become much more complicated. The common devices will soon be replaced by onboard computer systems.
