HYBRIDS

Ornithoptera croesus croesus Bacan X Ornithoptera priamus priamus (Seram)

Ornithoptera croesus lydius (Halmahera) X Ornithoptera priamus poseidon (Salawati)

Ornithoptera croesus lydius (Halmahera) X Ornithoptera priamus teucrus (Biak)

Rare and local but widespread in the Moluccas, this is a lowland species that is now being bred commercially which may help protect it from extinction due to heavy logging and deforestation in its habitat. Several subspecies have been described.

Ornithoptera aesacus (Ney, 1903)

IUCN conservation status category: INDETERMINATE.

Ornithoptera aesacus is the least known of the three species of the Ornithoptera genus - aesacus, priamus and croesus.

The species was described from one male and two females which were bred from larvae collected by John Waterstradt in 1905. Unfortunately, Mr. Waterstradt failed to describe the early stages. Until this date little is known about the species which is still rare in collections. Very few specimens exist in museum collections. Hardly any specimens are known to have been collected from the time of Waterstradt's discovery of the species until the 1980's when a Jakarta collector managed to obtain a small series for sale. The present status of the species is unclear. Field data is virtually unknown and little is known about its habitat.

Rare and restricted to the small and heavily logged island of Obi in Indonesia, Its future may depend on commercial ranching which has ensured its preservation for the time being. Ranching has become a major source of income for some islanders. The photo does not do justice to the shades of aqua and turquoise in its wings. Some specimens have added gold spots on the hind wings.
