Smartphones 2 Teacher’s Notes

Task 1. Let’s talk about addiction. What can you be addicted to? Write below. Which of these things are you personally addicted to? Would you like to get rid of your addiction?

Possible answers: drugs, alcohol, smoking, gambling, coffee, power, television, shopping, chocolate, computer games, smartphones.

Task 2. Write down the questions I’m going to dictate.

1) Do you check your messages first thing in the morning?

2) Do you check your phone before going to sleep?

3) Do you check your phone regularly with no reason?

4) Do you think you must read a message as soon as you receive it?

5) Do you check your phone or send messages in social situations, eg at dinner or while talking to friends?

6) Do you check your phone more than 30 times a day?

7) Do you always check or use your phone during ‘dead’ time, such as waiting for a bus or an appointment?

8) Do you often want to check your phone or send messages while driving?

9) Do you worry about losing your phone?

10) Do you worry about being addicted to your phone?

If there are more than 6 ‘yes’ answers, you might be addicted to your phone. Share your thoughts with a partner. Who is more addicted to their phone - you or your partner? Who is the most addicted person in class/the most addicted person you know?

Task 3. Discuss with a partner the strategies for someone who is seriously addicted to their mobile phone – how do you identify and control the overuse of such technology as the mobile phone? Make a list of such strategies that you will both agree on. There are a few pictures to help you if you run out of ideas.

- Take a mobile addiction survey to increase awareness.

- Every time you use your phone, ask yourself why, and if it is really necessary.

- Spend time with friends and family without constantly consulting your phone.

- Check your phone not more than once an hour.

- Turn off alerts for messages, email, and smartphone apps.

- Start turning off your phone completely for short periods of time

- Identify the sources of addiction (email/ messaging/ games/ Instagram, etc.) and set regular times when you would use those (eg twice a day)

- Delete time-wasters, like games, from your phone

- Delete the social network apps from your phone and only open them from your browser

- Stop using your phone at the time of doing other things (eg reading, cooking, exercising)

Now choose your top three pieces of advice and think of the reasons why you’ve chosen them.

Task 4. What are some of the annoying ways people use their phones?

- When someone’s having a loud phone conversation on a bus;

- When someone they’re talking to is constantly checking their phone;

- When someone is using their phone while driving;

- When a barista or a waiter are using their smartphone instead of working;

Do you feel annoyed in those situations? What do you usually do? What would you say in each of those situations to stop the person from doing that?

- You really shouldn’t…

- I’d prefer you not to…

- You’re not allowed to…

- I don’t like the way you are…

- Can you please stop (+ …ing)?

- Could you stop… please?

Role-play the situations:
