As Hiccup fulfills his dream of creating a peaceful dragon utopia, Toothless’ discovery of an untamed, elusive mate draws the Night Fury away. When danger mounts at home and Hiccup’s reign as village chief is tested, both dragon and rider must make impossible decisions to save their kind. This is one of those rare franchises that really has had the chance to grow and mature with its audience, and The Hidden World feels like the perfect emotional send off that this franchise has earned. These characters have brilliant development over the franchise, growing and evolving into different people but still holding on to the traits that make them unique and compelling. You continue to see friendships grow and change, especially between Toothless and Hiccup which makes the films ideas of coming to terms with separation and parting ways all that more poignant.

The story, though fun and full of adventure felt like the weakest entry into the trilogy, taking a lot of inspiration from the previous films and putting them to a slightly different scale and situation than the first - making the film feel quite nostalgic which is actually quite impressive for a franchise that spans just 9 years. The idea that the dragons and the vikings who protect them are yet again threatened by an outside force may seem like a repeat but this time around its handled with a level of maturity that comes with the final film in the trilogy - and taking a slightly different approach in solving the problem does keep the story fresh. It also holds a lot more emotional gravitas than before, as the stakes feel heightened as characters are tested, bonds are fragile and a journeys end is looming around the corner.

It’s astonishing just how far the animation has come in this franchise, it’s by far the most polished and accomplished animation in the trilogy - capturing more depth, colour and beauty than ever before. This is down to the incredible new technology the studio was able to use in production and boy was it worth it for the look into the Hidden World alone.

And not only was the Hidden World full of vibrancy but even the initial return to Berk was full of so much colour and incredibly designed structures that you couldn’t help but stare in awe.

The Hidden World is an emotional send off to the franchise. It’s warm and fun with some outstanding animation. It may not be the best in the trilogy but it’s certainly a wonderful note to bow out on. 4/5.
