The hobbit jumped nearly out of his skin when the hiss came in his ears, and he suddenly saw the pale eyes sticking out at him. “Who are you?” he said, thrusting his dagger in front of him.

- Then Bilbo sat down on a seat by his door, crossed his legs, and blew out a beautiful grey ring of smoke that sailed up into the air without breaking and floated away over The Hill.
- You have noticed already that Mr. Baggins was not quite so prosy as he liked to believe, also that he was very fond of flowers.
- With that the hobbit turned and scuttled inside his round green door, and shut it as quickly as he dared, not to seen rude. Wizards after all are wizards.
- They had not been at table long, in fact they had hardly reached the third cake, when there came another even louder ring at the bell.
- And when you’ve finished, if any are whole,
- To dungeons deep and caverns old
- And this is bow Thorin began.
- On the table in the light of a big lamp with a red shad he spread a piece of parchment rather like a map.
- After all there is the Side-door, and dragons must sleep sometimes, I suppose.
- Far over the misty mountains cold
- Mostly it had been as good as May can be, even in merry tales, but now it was cold and wet. In the Lone-lands they had to camp when they could, but at least it had been dry.
- Suddenly the red light shone out very bright through the tree-trunks not far ahead.
- He took a big bite off a sheep’s leg he was toasting, and wiped his lips on his sleeve.
- And so the argument began all over again, and went on hotter than ever, until at last they decided to sit on the sacks one by one and squash them, and boil them next time.
- Now Gandalf led the way. “We must not miss the road, or we shall be done for,” he said.
- Then off they went into another song as ridiculous as the one I have written down in full. At last one, a tall young fellow, came out from the trees and bowed to Gandalf and to Thorin.
- The moon was shining in a broad silver crescent. He held up the map and the white light shone through it.
- Round and round far underground
- The hobbit jumped nearly out of his skin when the hiss came in his ears, and he suddenly saw the pale eyes sticking out at him. “Who are you?” he said, thrusting his dagger in front of him.
- What has roots as nobody sees,
- It cannot be seen, cannot be felt,
- And beats high mountain down.
- Bilbo seeing what had happened and having nothing better to ask stuck to his question.
- But at any rate Gollum did not at once attack him. He could see the sword in Bilbo’s hand. He sat still, shivering and whispering. At last Bilbo could wait no longer.
- Utterly miserable as Gollum sounded, Bilbo could not find much pity in his heart, and he had a feeling that anything Gollum wanted so much could hardly be something good.
- Out of the Frying-Pan into the Fire
- The dwarves looked at him with quite a new respect, when he talked about dodging guards, jumping over Gollum, and squeezing through, as if it was not very difficult or very alarming.
- All of a sudden they heard a howl away down hill, a long shuddering howl.
- And light the night for our delight,
- The eagle only sharpened his beak on a stone and trimmed his feathers and took no notice.
- Quickly now to the top of this rock the eagles swooped one by one and set down their passengers.
- The dwarves groaned and looked most distressed, and Bilbo wept. They had begun to think Gandalf was going to come all the way and would always be there to help them out of difficulties.
- The dwarves all gathered round when they heard the wizard talking like this to Bilbo.
- They were bigger than hornets. The drones were bigger than your thumb, a good deal, and the bands of yellow on their deep black bodies shone like fiery gold.
- As for Bilbo he could easily have trotted through his legs without ducking his head to miss the fringe of the man’s brown tunic.
- So Gandalf gave a long shrill whistle, and presently Thorin and Dori came round the house by the garden path and stood bowing low before them.
- Gandalf whistled again; but Nori and Ori were there almost before he had stopped, for, if you remember, Gandalf had told them to come in pairs every five minutes.
- So Gandalf went on with the tale, until he came to the fight in the dark, the discovery of the lower gate, and their horror when they found that Mr. Baggins had been mislaid.
- The dogs could stand on their hind-legs when they wished, and carry things with their fore-feet. Quickly they got out boards and trestles from the side walls and set them up near the fire.
- Bilbo began to nod again. Suddenly up stood Gandalf.
- At last Gandalf pushed away his plate and jug — he had eaten two whole loaves (with masses of butter and honey and clotted cream) and drunk at least a quart of mead and he took out his pipe.
- Bilbo thought he knew what the wizard meant.
- But nothing they could say would change his mind.
- They each shouldered the heavy pack and the water-skin which was their share, and turned from the light that lay on the lands outside and plunged into the forest.
- They could still see his hood above the water when they ran to the bank.
- To the fattest of these bundles the spider went —
- Are weaving webs to wind me.
- Things were looking pretty bad again, when suddenly Bilbo appeared and charged into the astonished spiders unexpectedly from the side.
- And then he fell asleep, and there was complete silence for a long time.
- At that Thorin shut his mouth and would not say another word.
“What iss he, my preciouss?” whispered Gollum (who always spoke to himself through never having anyone else to speak to). This is what he had come to find out, for he was not really very hungry at the moment, only curious; otherwise he would have grabbed first and whispered afterwards. “I am Mr. Bilbo Baggins. I have lost the dwarves and I have lost the wizard, and I don’t know where I am; and “I don’t want to know, if only I can get, away.”
“What’s he got in his handses?” said Gollum, looking at the sword, which he did not quite like.
“A sword, a blade which came out of Gondolin!”
“Sssss (ссссс),” said Gollum, and became quite polite (сказал Голлум, и стал очень вежливым). “Praps ye sits here (возможно ты присядешь здесь; praps = perhaps) and chats with it a bitsy (и поболтаешь с ним чуток), my preciousss (мой драгоценный). It like riddles, praps it does, does it (ему нравятся загадки, возможно нравятся, так ведь)?” He was anxious to appear friendly (ему очень хотелось выглядеть дружелюбным), at any rate for the moment (во всяком случае, в этот момент), and until he found out more about the sword and the hobbit (и до тех пор, пока он не узнает больше об этом мече и о хоббите), whether he was quite alone really (и действительно ли он был совершенно один), whether he was good to eat (и был ли он съедобен: «хорош, чтобы быть съеденным»), and whether Gollum was really hungry (и был ли сам Голлум действительно голоден). Riddles were all he could think of (загадки — вот единственное: «все» о чем он мог подумать = смог придумать). Asking them (загадывать их), and sometimes guessing them (и иногда отгадывать их), had been the only game he had ever played (это была единственная игра, в которую он когда-либо играл) with other funny creatures (с другими забавными существами) sitting in their holes in the long, long ago (сидящими в своих норках очень, очень давно), before he lost all his friends (до того, как он потерял всех своих друзей) and was driven away (и был изгнан; to drive), alone (в одиночестве), and crept down, down, into the dark under the mountains (и заполз вниз, вниз в тьму под горами).
“Very well (очень хорошо),” said Bilbo, who was anxious to agree (которому очень хотелось согласиться), until he found out more about the creature (до тех пор, пока он не выяснит больше об этом существе), whether he was quite alone (был ли тот действительно совершенно один), whether he was fierce or hungry (и был ли он свирепым или голодным), and whether he was a friend of the goblins (и был ли он другом гоблинов).

“You ask first (ты загадываешь первым),” he said, because he had not had time to think of a riddle (потому что у него не было времени подумать о какой-нибудь загадке).
So Gollum hissed (тогда Голлум прошипел):
What has roots as nobody sees (у чего есть корни, которых никто не видит),
Is taller than trees (и выше чем деревья),
Up, up it goes (вверх и вверх оно идет),
And yet never grows (и все же никогда не растет)?
“Easy (легко)!” said Bilbo (сказал Бильбо). “Mountain, I suppose (гора, я полагаю).”
“Does it guess easy (что, так легко догадаться)? It must have a competition with us (он должен соревноваться с нами), my preciouss (мой драгоценный)! If precious asks (если драгоценный спрашивает), and it doesn’t answer (и тот не отвечает), we eats it (мы съедим его), my preciousss (мой драгоценный). If it asks us (если он спрашивает нас), and we doesn’t answer (и мы не отвечаем), then we does what it wants, eh (тогда мы сделаем то, что он хочет, а)? We shows it the way out, yes (мы покажем ему дорогу отсюда, да)!”
“All right (хорошо)!” said Bilbo, not daring to disagree (не осмеливаясь не согласиться), and nearly bursting his brain (и его мозги чуть не лопнули) to think of riddles (придумывая загадки) that could save him from being eaten (которые могли бы спасти его от /возможности/ быть съеденным).
